Cinema Vandalized As Audiences Follow Tik Tok Trends
Illumination released Minions: Rise of Gru this past weekend and there is no doubt it has been a box office success, but it has also caused a surprising surge of vandalism. Guernsey’s only cinema was forced to stop showing Minions: Rise of Gru due to vandalism and bad behavior from audiences fueled by Tik Tok trends. Social media promoted audiences seeing the Minions film to dress up in suits and formal attire and dispute screenings. Mallard Cinema manager, Daniel Phillips-Smith, shared that audience members were throwing things, swearing, arguing with other moviegoers, and engaging in acts of vandalism. In response, the theater was forced to pull the film from the screen and the financial impact has been “massive” due to the number of refunds that have been issued. Phillips-Smith shared that “It's been absolutely heartbreaking, we've had families who won't even go back into the screen when we've tried to sort it out, families leaving before the film has even started and of course, the children have been in tears.” In the UK the “gentle-minions'' trend has resulted in mosh pits and disruptive cheering causing police to shut down theaters and screenings. While it is disappointing this has to be said, it is important for exhibitors to be aware of these disruptive social media trends, and be prepared to take action if it becomes disruptive in their theaters. Hollywood Looks To Trim Production Costs To Face Inflation
With inflation continuing to rise as a result of supply chain turmoil, the entertainment industry is not immune to the effects. The industry is just beginning to recover from the pandemic and is looking forward to a record production year as a result. Because the demand for cinematic production is so high, however, studios are struggling to produce sets on budget and on time. Executive VP of physical production at Legendary, Herb Gains, shares that “the accessibility of steel and lumber due to supply chain issues have driven up the cost of materials by at least 25 to 30 percent.” He also told reporters that an identical set was double the price of what it was had they produced it 4 years ago. For all supplies, all across the board, studios are facing increased supply costs which are resulting in less important scenes being removed in an effort to keep costs down and stay within budget. In some areas, it is becoming cost-prohibitive to build stages. In addition to increasing production costs, the time it takes to fulfill stage material orders is lengthening. Increased shipment times are resulting in eight to ten-month lead times for critical parts and supplies like electrical boxes and stage doors, lengthening production times and delaying productions from the big screen. Inflation and Supply chain delays are not only causing increased production costs but lengthening production timelines as well.  These issues in turn could possibly cause exhibitors to see film release dates (once again) delayed, or increased showing prices. Recession, Stagflation, and its Effects
With inflation on the rise and layoffs becoming more frequent the economy is starting to look frightening. Along with this, the stock market has also fallen and many experts are starting to raise awareness about a possible recession. Stagflation is also a huge concern amongst experts. Stagflation is a period where there is low economic growth, high unemployment, and rising prices. With all of this occurring shrinkflation has also been popping up amongst many products. Shrinkflation is where companies decrease the size of products while still charging the same price for them. With shrinkflation occurring amongst many products including toilet paper, granola bars, and more it raises concerns in the theater industry. Will manufacturers start to fill concession candy boxes with less product, while charging the same amount - or more? The answer is, most likely, yes. With that being said, theater owners need to keep an eye on inflation and the current state of the economy as it will continue to impact theaters more and more.  Read more

Will The Way Of The Water Match the Success Of its Predecessor?
The Way Of The Water director, James Cameron, expresses uncertainty as to whether or not the sequel will match the success of its predecessor. After the undeniable box office success of Avatar several years ago fans and producers alike are questioning how the sequel release will go over. Cameron has expressed that he knows the risk associated with releasing a sequel years later calling it “the dumbest business case in history.” Cameron also shared that the risk may not pay off saying, “If we did 20 percent or 30 percent less because the market simply doesn't exist anymore, that would be bad.” However, Avatar 2 has the lure of 3D on its side, a viewing style that has not been as prevalent since the release of the first film. It is not unlikely that Avatar 2 will reignite the love for the 3D viewing style in fans and be a huge draw for audiences. While Cameron keeps box office aspirations in check in the face of uncertainty surrounding Avatar: The Way Of The Water, the excitement rising in fans for its release is indisputable.
